Before you start making your own cabinets, check all the pieces for any possible damage. Make sure you have all the right tools for installation, including fasteners and screws. Every fixture should be of the right size, so that you can attach them properly.
For the entire installation process, you would need – tape measure, carpenter’s square, hammer, bits and drills, jigsaw, chalk line, masking tape, power screw driver, step ladder, straight edge, shims, circuit tester, mitre saw, utility knife and furniture clamps. You will also need to consider some safety issues since the cabinetry is bulky and heavy. Apart from assistance, you will need solid safety shoes, safety glasses and proper clothing.
Start off by turning off all the utilities and appliances, along with the kitchen’s electrical power. Unplug or move all the appliances from the work area. Remove the sink and turn off the water connection.
Thereafter, you must remove all the current cabinets, however if you wish to use the existing flooring, you must tape down some thick cardboard and cover that. Before removing these cabinets, you must empty them completely. Start with the top cabinets first and then move upwards, while you get rid of all the moulding.
If there are any damaged walls behind the kitchen cabinets, you must fix them now. Follow the instructions listed in your cabinet guide and follow them closely. Read it a couple of times before you start installing them.
